"Together we are lifelong CREST learners"

Principal's Message

Kia ora koutou

As we move into the colder months, we often see an increase in winter coughs, colds and other “ills and chills” making their way around school. While we can’t avoid every bug, there are some simple things families can do to help keep children warm, healthy and ready for learning.

A few helpful reminders for Terms 2 and 3:

  • Please ensure children come to school dressed appropriately for the weather, with warm layers they can add or remove throughout the day.
  • Shoes and socks are especially important during the colder, wetter months. We encourage all students to wear shoes outside during Terms 2 and 3 to help keep feet warm and dry.
  • A named beanie, slippers or extra warm layer kept in the classroom can be very helpful on chilly mornings.
  • Packing a spare pair of socks or an extra layer in school bags can also save the day after wet-weather play!
  • A small pack of tissues in school bags is appreciated, particularly during cold and flu season.
  • Continue to encourage good hygiene habits such as coughing or sneezing into elbows, washing hands regularly and staying home when unwell.

Having healthy students at school strengthens staff health too.  When lots of teachers get sick over the cooler, winter months it’s hard to get enough relieving staff to cover classrooms.  In these instances we are left with no other option than to split classes, which is never ideal.

Thank you for helping to keep PBS healthy!

PRINCIPAL’S C.R.E.S.T CORNER:

At PBS we champion our school C.R.E.S.T values in everything we do.
Curiosity. Respect. Excellence. Self Management. Teamwork

We had a wonderful celebration of Pink Shirt Day last Friday. The way our staff also came together to support this special day was fantastic. When children see adults united behind an important cause, it reinforces just how much it matters and helps strengthen the message of kindness, inclusion, and standing up for others. Tu Meke koutou!

Reminder of our Upcoming Teacher Only Day - Friday, 29 May

At PBS, we are holding a teacher-only day on Friday, 29 May (attached to King’s Birthday weekend).  As school will be closed for instruction on this date parents will need to make alternative arrangements for childcare.

Our teachers will be using this particular day to focus on new expectations for teaching the writing process and the associated assessments components.

Thank you in advance for your support of my team who are doing their very best to understand and deliver these significant curriculum changes.

Using Māori Language at Home

Learning another language provides many benefits including greater academic achievement, greater cognitive development, and more positive attitudes towards other languages and cultures. So, let’s give it a go and help to revitalise this unique language to Aotearoa for our tamariki. Each week our newsletter will include words or phrases that you might like to try out at your kāinga/home.

Here are some essential kupu that you may hear ia ra (everyday)

Give these phrases a try this week:

He tino tangata koe – You’re a wonderful human

E whai hua ana āu mahi – You make a difference

He tangata ahurei koe – You’re one of a kind

He hirahira ō mahi – What you do matters

New Entrant Parent Information Presentation – Tātahi Syndicate

A New Entrant Information Presentation will be held for all parents of new children on Friday, 22 May from 10am – 10.30am in the school staffroom.

This session will:

  • provide an overview of the ‘Transition to School’
  • provide an overview of the New Entrant Programme in reading, writing and mathematics
  • highlight how you can help at home with learning

In Tātahi Syndicate, we believe that successful partnerships between home and school are established when both parties have a shared expectation and knowledge of their child’s learning. We would love to see you there.
