Newsletter 2025/21

"Together we are lifelong CREST learners"

Principal's Message

Kia ora koutou

In today’s newsletter, you’ll find information about how to nominate parents for our school Board. I encourage you to give this some real thought — the teamwork of our current Board, along with past PBS Boards, has played a huge role in making our school a great place to learn, work, and connect.

If you’re considering putting your name forward — or encouraging someone else to — please know that you don’t need prior experience. I’m here to support all parent representatives every step of the way. It’s an energising and meaningful role, and one you won’t regret being part of!

Want to learn more about being a Board member before putting your nomination in? Click HERE for a webinar.

Please keep reading this newsletter for information on:

  • Tomorrow: LEARNING CONFERENCES – school closed for instruction (NB: The school library will be open all day – if other siblings need a space to wait during conferences)

PRINCIPAL’S C.R.E.S.T CORNER:

At PBS we champion our school C.R.E.S.T values in everything we do.
Curiosity. Respect. Excellence. Self Management. Teamwork

Yesterday Evie and Michelle from Rm 18 popped across to share their wonderful writing. In class they had conducted a science experiment and they wrote about what they observed. We talked about their curiosity around what happened in the experiment and the excellence they showed with their writing. Ka pai korua!

Board Election News

Nominations Reminder

There is still time for you to get your nomination in to join our School Board.  We need five parent representatives to join the Paraparaumu Beach School Board.  Schooled Election Pilot have been appointed as the Returning Officer for this election.

We have already sent out nomination forms by email or by post, however, if you need additional nomination forms, or want a copy in Te Reo Māori or another language just contact the Returning Officer directly on 0800 VOTENZ (0800 868 369) or election@electionpilot.nz.

Nominations close at noon on Wednesday, 6 August.  You can email in your nomination, complete it online at www.boardelections.nz or fill it in and drop it off to the school office.  You can also send in a candidate statement and photo with your nomination as well.

A copy of the electoral roll is kept at the school office and is available to be checked during usual school hours.

Feedback from Board Surveys of Parent and Staff

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our Board surveys last term and CONGRATULATIONS to Steph Wallace, who won the $200 Warehouse Voucher prize draw!

The feedback from both staff and parents highlighted strong agreement on what matters most for all of us at PBS, particularly student wellbeing, growing confident learners, and strong partnerships with whānau.

Staff feedback indicated that they could see more growth across our key goals than our parents.  We believe this has to do with staff being closer to the ‘chalkface’ every day and knowing the finer details of the work being put in to advance our initiatives. This also leads us to query whether we need to improve the way we communicate this ‘behind the scenes’ progress to our parent community. Perhaps snapshots from my monthly reports to the board could help keep parents stay more up to date.  If you have any other ideas, please let me know.

Once again, the board and I appreciate your thoughtful insights.  We will use these to guide our goals and initiatives for the 2026-2028 strategic plan.

Ngā mihi, Jess Ward on behalf of the Board

Digitech Corner

The Internet Matters website has lots of guides on how to implement parental controls for various sites that your child/ren might be regularly using, such as Spotify, Netflix, TikTok, Youtube, Playstation, X-box, Snapchat, Minecraft and Roblox. We recommend checking them out to ensure that your online safety settings are set right to protect your child’s wellbeing when online.

Using Māori Language at Home

Learning another language provides many benefits including greater academic achievement, greater cognitive development, and more positive attitudes towards other languages and cultures. So, let’s give it a go and help to revitalise this unique language to Aotearoa for our tamariki. Each week our newsletter will include words or phrases that you might like to try out at your kāinga/home.

Here are some essential kupu that you may hear ia ra (everyday)

Phrases for getting things started

Whakaterea te waka – Let’s get started

This phrase is a metaphoric phrase and not a literal one. If you translate it literally it means ‘launch the waka’.

Calendar Art

Calendar Art Orders Are Now Open!

Our talented tamariki have been hard at work creating stunning pieces of art, which they hope to share with you during this week’s Learning Conferences.  These masterpieces can be transformed into beautiful keepsakes, including 2026 calendars, diaries, greeting cards, mouse pads, and sketch pads.  These make perfect gifts for family and friends (or a special treat for yourself!) and are a great way to celebrate your child’s creativity.

Orders can be placed through KINDO. 📝 Please make sure to return the form to school, even if you’re paying online. Orders close Friday, 15th August.

Thank you for supporting our young artists — we can’t wait for you to see what they’ve created!
