Deputy Principal's Message

Kia ora PBS whānau,

Welcome to the final week of Term 3 before we head into the school holidays.

Last week was an incredibly busy one for our seniors. They performed their production, Justice City, three times across the week and had a great audience turn out on Wednesday evening. Productions are huge undertakings, involving weeks of preparation, but the final product is always worth it because it provides an opportunity for students to shine – on stage, backstage, on the tech crew, set design, costumes, props, plus every other element. Well done to all of the tamariki involved! We clearly have some talented thespians in our midst. And a huge shout out to the senior teaching team, who enabled it all to come to fruition. Ka rawe koutou.

Also last week, our senior Kapa Haka group, Pasifika group and solo bag piper, Caden Turner, visited the Coastal Villa Retirement Village to perform for the residents there. It was a beautiful morning of cultural sharing and connection for our tamariki. The following day, I received a lovely phone call from a 92 year old resident. She enjoyed the experience so much, and was so impressed with the students and staff, that she felt compelled to ring and pass on some feedback. Needless to say, these are the best kinds of phone calls! I acknowledged these students at our whole school assembly today as it was a wonderful example of our CREST values in action.

And finally, all the best to Year 8 student Lucie Thomson, who is heading off to the inter-regional cross country event in Nelson this week. Qualifying for this event is an achievement in itself. Kia kaha Lucie and we look forward to hearing how you go.

This morning our choir, led by Ms Sutherland, performed at our whole school assembly. The students self-managed superbly despite a technical fault with their music track. They continued on with their entertaining performance without faltering. Ka pai koutou!

Class Request Process for 2027 For Exceptional Circumstances

The process of putting class lists together for a new year is an extremely complex and time consuming task. There are many variables to consider, for example; equal class sizes, the gender balance in each class, the distribution of students with social/behaviour and learning needs, medical needs, splitting cousins/siblings, and so on.

In a small school there may only be one class at each level and therefore no opportunity to group students in different ways. In a school our size, whilst we do have the advantage of flexibility, the process takes time and consideration. I can assure you that we act professionally and thoughtfully when placing students in classes. Therefore, we ask that parents are understanding and supportive of the complexities involved.

At PBS we prefer that parents do not submit requests unless there are exceptional circumstances. If parents want us to consider any exceptional circumstances that their child may have in regards to class placement for next year, then the formal process below must be followed:

Requests must specifically describe the exceptional circumstances around the child’s needs
It is preferable that parents do not request a specific teacher by name
Requests must be from the child’s parent/legal guardian
Requests must be in writing to the Principal jward@pbs.school.nz
Requests must be received no later than Friday, 23 October

Whilst we allow parents to submit such requests, we do ask in return, that the final decision on class placement (whether or not a request has been met) is both respected and promoted positively by parents to their child.

Using Māori Language at Home

Learning another language provides many benefits including greater academic achievement, greater cognitive development, and more positive attitudes towards other languages and cultures. So, let’s give it a go and help to revitalise this unique language to Aotearoa for our tamariki. Each week our newsletter will include words or phrases that you might like to try out at your kāinga/home.

Here are some essential kupu that you may hear ia ra (everyday)

Give these morning phrases a try this week:

Ata Marie – Good morning

Kia tere! – Hurry up

Haere tonu – Keep going

E kai! – Eat up!

Kei te hiakai koe? – Are you hungry?

Out of Zone Applications

If you have any children due to start school soon that you have not let us know about, or if you have friends or neighbours who don’t currently have a child at PBS, but may be hoping to enrol a student here in Terms 1 or 2 2027, please ask them to contact our school office as soon as possible. Thank you.

The process for “Out-of-Zone” applications for Terms 1 and 2 2027 five year old new entrant students is now open. Applications close on Monday, 19 October at 4pm.

BYOD - Affordable Chromebook Offer

Students in Years 4-8 use Chromebooks and Google Classroom to access different parts of their curriculum learning. An affordable chromebook option can be found through the New Zealand company, Insite Technology. They sell refurbished chromebooks. Wellington Regional Swimming Success

Congratulations to Nico and Aurora van Reenen, who competed at the Wellington Regional Primary School Swimming Championships last Friday! Aurora had an outstanding day, finishing 1st in the 25m Backstroke and 25m Breaststroke, and 2nd in the 25m Freestyle and Nico also had a fantastic competition, placing 2nd in the 25m Breaststroke and 50m Backstroke. The pair also teamed up with other Kāpiti swimmers to achieve an impressive 3rd place in the Kāpiti Relay.

A big congratulations also to Lucie Thomson, Lani Collier-Fiske and Olive Jarvis, who also qualified for the Regional event. Awesome mahi, everyone!

Help Us Spookify the School Halloween Disco

Preparations are underway for our upcoming School Halloween Disco, and we are looking to transform the hall into a fun, spooky party space for the students!

To help make this event a success without stretching our budget, we are asking for donations of any Halloween decorations you might have at home and no longer need. If you could drop them off to the office it would be greatly appreciated.

Pasifika Performance

Our Pasifika group put on an incredible performance recently, alongside our Kapa Haka group at Coastal Villas Retirement Village. Seeing our students take the floor with pride was very special – they brought so much energy and heart to the Tahitian and Cook Islands songs. You could feel the pride in the room as they shared Pacific culture, and the residents’ smiles and applause made all the practice so worth it.

What made the morning extra special was seeing how easily our students connected with the residents before and afterwards. Between sharing stories, hearing memories from the residents, and passing around a few laughs, it became so much more than just a performance. Watching these two generations come together with such warmth and mutual respect made it a morning none of us will forget anytime soon.

Lost Property

There is a lot of lost property around the school. Please come and have a check through it before the end of term. Any items not collected will be donated.

Weather depending, it will be displayed on the courts on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Recent Student Achievements

Taekwondo: Congratulations to Blake Woodham who has now graduated to his blue belt and is super proud! Well done.

Jiu Jitsu: Congratulations to Teina Walker, who competed at the NZ Grappler Capital Challenge on Sunday. He won a Silver medal in his Gi division and a Gold medal in his No-Gi division. Well done, Teina!

Recent Student Achievements

League: Over the weekend, Year 8 student Jermayne Inoke, was on the Gold Coast due to being selected to take part in a League Kings boot camp. League Kings is an organisation that fosters aspiring league players, providing a development pathway. Jermayne will return to Australia in November after being selected for the tournament team.

Rugby: Fletcher Cooper, former PBS student, Board Outstanding Achiever Award recipient, and big brother to Ardie and Kohen (current students) has been selected for the NZ secondary schools rugby squad.

Touch Rugby

Touch Rugby Teams for the upcoming 2026/27 season have been confirmed and are displayed in the staffroom window. Coaches for each team will be in touch to introduce themselves and coordinate training times. Registration fees can be paid through KINDO.

Team registrations are now open for:

Primary – 5.00pm – Year 5 & 6, Year 7 & 8 teams only please

Once you have registered your team you will be sent a link from Sporty to send out to your players so they can register themselves. All players must be registered in your team before the first game and prior to taking the court.

All other terms & conditions are clearly set out on the registration form. Please ensure you read them carefully and understand them before registering your team.

NNZ has developed the Year 7 & 8 and Year 5 & 6 Player Development Programmes (PDP) to broaden the talent pool and inspire a lifelong love of netball.

These PDP’s provide opportunities for players to develop and extend their netball skills while continuing to engage players.

This program is open to all Primary School Players in Years 5 – 8 (including boys). Numbers are capped so please register early to avoid disappointment.

The PDP will be delivered by Kat Kerr, our coach assessor and mentor and some of our local coaches who are making themselves available to deliver this fantastic programme to young netball stars.

The cost of the PDP program is $60.00 and can be paid online when registering.
