"Together we are lifelong CREST learners"
Deputy Principal's Message
Kia ora PBS whānau,
Welcome to Week 8 of Term 3. With just 3 weeks to go until the school holidays, there’s a lot happening so please keep an eye on upcoming dates and any communications that are posted out via our HERO platform.
This week the AIMS Games kicked off in Tauranga. One of our Year 8 students, Lucie Thomson, competed in the Girls Cross Country event on Sunday. There were 143 competitors in the race and Lucie won it convincingly, just shy of breaking the course record. Ka rawe, Lucie, an amazing result and one we know you’ve worked hard for.
Yesterday we had Project Jonah visit and present to all of our syndicates. Project Jonah is an organisation made up of volunteers who work to protect and help marine mammals through rescue, action and protection programmes. Being a coastal community, it was a great opportunity for our tamariki to learn more about some of our marine mammals and simple ways they can contribute to helping them survive.

PRINCIPAL’S C.R.E.S.T CORNER:
At PBS we champion our school C.R.E.S.T values in everything we do.
Curiosity. Respect. Excellence. Self Management. Teamwork
We teach our students that learning is a journey that continues throughout your life, and we aim to role model this with our own professional development opportunities. On Saturday we had 17 staff members take part in either their revalidation or a full First Aid course.
I want to acknowledge these team members for demonstrating our CREST values across the day. And for giving up a good portion of their own whānau time to ensure that we continue to provide up to date first aid care for all of our PBS tamariki.
Welcome to Our Recent New Students

Thank you.

Board Survey Prize Draw
Congratulations to Stacey Vivian and Bodielle Hutchison who won the recent parent/ whānau survey prize draw of a $100 Warehouse voucher each.
Using Māori Language at Home
Learning another language provides many benefits including greater academic achievement, greater cognitive development, and more positive attitudes towards other languages and cultures. So, let’s give it a go and help to revitalise this unique language to Aotearoa for our tamariki. Each week our newsletter will include words or phrases that you might like to try out at your kāinga/home.
Here are some essential kupu that you may hear ia ra (everyday)
Give these phrases a try this week.
Different ways of saying “I’m done”
Ko mutu – I’m finished
Kua nawhe – That’s enough (transliteration)
Ka puta – I’m out
Kua tutuki – I have completed what I set out to do
Kua riwha – I have done all that I can
EPRO8
This week EPro8 is happening for ākonga in Years 5 & 6. The EPro8 Challenge is an inter-school science and engineering competition. Every year over 35,000 students from throughout New Zealand take part.
The EPro8 Challenge starts with the EPro8 School Programme. This consists of activities and events that teachers run within their school. The activities are designed to develop science, engineering and problem solving skills. Teams are then selected to compete against other local and regional schools. The programme is designed so that all students from Year 5 to Year 13 can experience STEM learning (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).
Road Safety Around the School
So far, most drivers who are dropping off children at school have remembered that we have clear ways and drop-and-go zones around our school, which have been in place since 2016.
Unfortunately, we have had phone calls from neighbours saying it seems drivers have forgotten that there is a clearway in operation on the north side of Beachwater Grove. This is signposted and is in operation between 8.30am – 9.30am, and 2.30pm and 3.30pm. If you live in Beachwater Grove and have a parking issue, please contact the Kapiti Coast District Council on 04 296 4854, as they are responsible for traffic management around the school or contact the police on *555
Netball
Please return all PBS netball tops and shorts to the school office as soon as possible.
Before handing them in, please ensure your uniform is:
Washed: To ensure uniforms are fresh and ready for the next player to wear
Completely Dry: Storage areas can cause damp clothing to quickly go mouldy, so please make sure items are fully dry before returning
Thank you for your assistance.
Touch Rugby
Collection of registration forms closed on Monday.
Our Touch Coordinator is now compiling the teams. If you are interested in coaching a team and haven’t already let us know, please give our school office a call (04) 298 5775.
Thanks.

Would You Like to Sponsor a Child to Attend Camp?
For many Kiwi kids, school camp is a rite of passage — a chance to step outside their comfort zone, try something new, build friendships and create memories that last. Our Year 7 & 8 Te Motu camp is an exciting opportunity for our students to experience adventure, independence, teamwork and a whole lot of fun together.
We know the cost of camp can be a challenge for some families, especially with the rising cost of living. Every Year 7 & 8 student will have the opportunity to attend camp, regard-less of their family’s ability to pay. However, when camp fees aren’t able to be covered, the cost is absorbed by the school, putting pressure on an already stretched budget and these additional costs can have a real impact on the funds we have available for other important resources, opportunities and experiences for our students.
We are inviting our school community, whānau and local businesses to consider sponsoring a child, or contributing towards camp costs. Every contribution, big or small, can make a difference. You might choose to cover part of a camp fee, contribute towards a particular activity, or sponsor the full cost of a child’s camp.
If you or your business would like to Sponsor a Child or contribute towards our camp, please get in touch with Debbie in the school office for more information at accounts@pbs.school.nz.
