"Together we are lifelong CREST learners"
Principal's Message
Kia ora koutou
A recent announcement from the Minister of Education confirmed that the implementation of the proposed curriculum changes for Science, Social Sciences, Arts, Health & PE, Technology and Languages will be delayed to a more realistic timeframe. This news has been welcomed with relief across schools, including here at PBS.
This updated timeline means schools can put more time and energy into getting the refreshed English and Mathematics curriculum right, without trying to juggle too many major changes at once. The pace of change in education — particularly when working with children — adds another layer of complexity, which is why our Teacher-Only Day this Friday is focused on continuing our professional learning in this space.
While the curriculum announcement is a relief, I remain disappointed that the Government’s May 2025 budget commitment of $192.5 million towards learning support has yet to deliver any significant change. While some schools have seen increases in learning support staffing, we are still waiting to see additional support delivered.
I live in hope of real change – because it is simply essential!

PRINCIPAL’S C.R.E.S.T CORNER:
At PBS we champion our school C.R.E.S.T values in everything we do.
Curiosity. Respect. Excellence. Self Management. Teamwork
Our Junior Cross Country was an absolute delight to watch last week. The weather was stunning and our Sports Ambassadors did a fantastic job supporting and encouraging all of our young runners.
I felt proud watching every student give their very best — whether that meant sprinting for a top placing or simply crossing the finish line in their own time. The competitive spirit was also obvious, with many kids pushing themselves to run the entire course at full speed!
I was equally proud to hear that all our senior students successfully climbed to Kapiti Island’s summit, Tūteremoana, last week as well! Thanks to the fantastic organisation of our Te Motu staff and a helpful grant from Nuku Ora, our students were able to experience one of the true treasures of our own ‘backyard’.
Kapiti Island is something many of us admire every day from afar, yet not everyone has the opportunity to step foot on the island and experience its beauty, history and wildlife firsthand.

Reminder of our Upcoming Teacher Only Day - This Friday, 29 May
Don’t forget that PBS is closed for instruction this Friday to enable our teachers to undertake professional learning.
As school will be closed for instruction, parents/caregivers will need to make alternative arrangements for childcare. Thank you.
Using Māori Language at Home
Learning another language provides many benefits including greater academic achievement, greater cognitive development, and more positive attitudes towards other languages and cultures. So, let’s give it a go and help to revitalise this unique language to Aotearoa for our tamariki. Each week our newsletter will include words or phrases that you might like to try out at your kāinga/home.
Here are some essential kupu that you may hear ia ra (everyday)
Give these phrases a try this week:
Tēnā koe i tō āwhina – Thanks for your help
Tēnā koe i tō wātea mai – Thanks for your time
E mānawatia ana tēnā – I really appreciate that
Kia tāruatia aku mihi – Thanks again
