"Together we are lifelong CREST learners"

Principal's Message

Kia ora koutou

Wow, PBS is so fortunate; we have 7 wonderful nominees standing in our Board Elections!

There are numerous schools around the motu struggling to get parents and community members to stand in board elections, so I feel so grateful that we have people in our community willing to give up their own time and energies to help keep PBS strong and productive.

Parents will receive an email notification shortly regarding the voting process.

PRINCIPAL’S C.R.E.S.T CORNER:

At PBS we champion our school C.R.E.S.T values in everything we do.
Curiosity. Respect. Excellence. Self Management. Teamwork

At PBS, our school values encourage respect for all people and cultures. With Di Puati’s mahi with our girls’ Pasifika performance group and an upcoming Tapa creation project through our Kahui Ako and KCDC, we’ve seen a wonderful growth in pride and interest among students from Pacific nations. Our school whānau includes students who whakapapa to Samoa, the Cook Islands, Tonga, Fiji, and Tokelau, and it’s exciting to see elements of these cultures represented.

Awesome examples can be seen in the artworks below, created by Room 1.  It’s great to see that such Pasifika-inspired patterns are increasingly finding their way into everyday schoolwork — a vibrant reminder of the richness our diverse community brings to PBS.

Great Student Work from Room 12

Room 12 has a class mascot – a Turtle called Shelly! Recently Room 12 kids have been creating their own turtle mascots and have used these to write descriptions.  I have loved seeing their wonderful efforts; they really made me smile!

Government Proposal to Replace NCEA

Last week, the Minister of Education made a significant announcement about the future direction of our national qualification, NCEA.

If these proposed changes are adopted, our current Year 8 students will be the first group to undertake these assessments when they enter Year 11 in 2028.

Consultation on the proposal is now open for school staff and parents to provide feedback. Have your say here: Consultation on proposal to replace NCEA – Ministry of Education

NB: The timeline for the proposal means that there will be no changes for students in Year 9 and above.

BOARD ELECTION NEWS

Nominations Closed

Nominations have now closed for our board elections and as there were more nominations than positions available, the election will be continuing to a vote.

The Paraparaumu Beach School Board received a total of seven nominations for five vacancies when nominations closed on 6 August.

Keep an eye out for voting information as this will be sent to all eligible voters no later than 13 August.  The voting packs will contain all the details on how to vote in the election as well as candidate statements and photos from the candidates that provided them.

The voting will close at 4pm on Wednesday, 10 September and the results will be available on 16 September.  The candidates who receive the most votes will be elected to the board and the results will be shared with the candidates and our Paraparaumu Beach School community.

If you have any questions about the election process, please contact the Returning Officer directly on 0800 VOTENZ (0800 868 3679) or election@electionpilot.nz

Using Māori Language at Home

Learning another language provides many benefits including greater academic achievement, greater cognitive development, and more positive attitudes towards other languages and cultures. So, let’s give it a go and help to revitalise this unique language to Aotearoa for our tamariki. Each week our newsletter will include words or phrases that you might like to try out at your kāinga/home.

Give this phrase a try this week:

Te ātaahua hoki! – How beautiful!

TE MOANA FUNDRAISING

Hotdogs - Friday, 22 August

Calendar Art

Calendar Art Orders Closing This Friday!

Our students have been busy creating vibrant, original artworks, and now you can turn their masterpieces into lasting keepsakes!  Choose from a range of personalised items including 2026 calendars, diaries, greeting cards, mouse pads, and sketch pads. These make thoughtful gifts for whānau and friends, or a special memento to treasure at home.  All profits will go towards helping cover the costs of the Te Moana camp in Term 4, so every order supports a great cause!

Orders can be placed through KINDO.  Please make sure to return the form to school, even if you’re paying online.  Orders close this Friday, 15th August.

Thank you for supporting our young artists and contributing to this important fundraising effort!

PBS Hockey News

On Friday, we had our end of season celebration for our PBS hockey teams (Years 3-8). After some fun playing hockey rounders on the turf, the players enjoyed hot food in the pavilion, and we acknowledged all our players, coaches and managers.

We have had an awesome season with lots of development from all of the players, and a fantastic group of coaches and managers including ex PBS students Vienna McDowell and Corey Whitfield, current PBS students Noah Hunt, Regan Tidy and Zavier Marshall, and parents Steph Caldwell, Sam Willis, Clare Pringle, Michelle Patterson and Paul Tessier. Huge thanks to all of them!

The players enjoyed the afternoon, especially the delicious food sponsored by local businesses Stratford Electrical and KS Beauty Studio – we could not have had this celebration without them- and provided by Sue and her team at the Kapiti Turf. Thank you so much!

On Sunday, the two Year 3/4 teams turned out despite the weather for their last games, including a PBS derby! The Year 7/8 and 5/6 teams will have their final games this week. Best of luck teams 🙂

Thanks to all the players and parents for another great season.

Recent Student Achievements

Netball:  The PBS Monkeys attended the Netball Manawatu Invitational Tournament on Sunday. This team is working hard preparing for their campaign at the AIMS Games. They walked away undefeated with an outstanding performance coming first in their division. Thanks again to our coaches, PBS AIMS committee, our team umpire, and all our whānau that supported us on the day. Well done girls – You Rock!
