"Together we are lifelong CREST learners"
Principal's Message
Kia ora koutou
We’re already up to Week 8 of an 11-week term, and there is certainly no shortage of activity at PBS!
Our school cross-country events are all done and dusted, and our finalists are preparing to represent us at the Interschool Cross Country next Tuesday. Huge thanks to all the staff and students who helped make our school events go smoothly. Well done to all our runners for their participation and of course CONGRATULATIONS to all our finalists (listed later in this newsletter). We wish you every success for next Tuesday’s challenge.
Our choir is also looking forward to attending The Big Sing in Wellington tomorrow. This event brings together nearly 1,500 secondary school students from across Wellington, Kāpiti, and the Wairarapa to perform at the Michael Fowler Centre. With 48 choirs competing over two days, it promises to be an inspiring experience for our students. It will be a fantastic opportunity to hear outstanding performances and see what they might aspire to.
Meanwhile, our chess teams are preparing for upcoming competitions. No doubt there will be lots of strategic thinking, problem-solving skills, and determination in action. We wish them all the very best as they put their skills to the test!

Using Māori Language at Home
Learning another language provides many benefits including greater academic achievement, greater cognitive development, and more positive attitudes towards other languages and cultures. So, let’s give it a go and help to revitalise this unique language to Aotearoa for our tamariki. Each week our newsletter will include words or phrases that you might like to try out at your kāinga/home.
Cheer on your team in te reo Māori:
E oma! – Run!
E tere! – Quickly!
Maranga! – Get up!
Titiro – Look
Kia manawanui – Hang in there
Kia toa! – Be determined!
Ka mau te wehi! – That’s outstanding!
Kia kaha ake e kare mā – Let’s go team
From the Student Council
Last week we attended the National Young Leaders Day (NYLD) in Wellington. We got to listen to a number of different speakers about their journey in their field of expertise and how they overcame challenges and faced their fears. It was a really cool day! Thank you to Jasmine Direen for joining us on the day.
Some advice from the speakers that resonated with us:
Emily: Graci Kim (Author)- Failure is not a stop sign.
Lucie: Riley Elliot (Marine Biologist, Shark Man) – Face your fears.
Ardie: William Pike (Amputee, Motivational speaker)- Never give up and keep going.
Ami: Lola Fisher (Co-Founder Create Happy Media)- You can create change.
Mrs Chambers: Stephen Gallagher (Emmy nominated Film & TV composer)- Don’t be afraid to ask for advice and make new connections.
Road Safety Around the School
Thank you to everyone who has responded to our request not to make U-turns in driveways near the school crossings. We appreciate your support in helping to keep our PBS kids safe. Safe travel to and from school relies on all of us making thoughtful and responsible choices behind the wheel.
We would also like to remind parents and caregivers that the drop-and-go zones are intended for quick drop-offs and pick-ups only. Please do not park in these areas, as doing so prevents other families from using them as intended.
Thank you for your co-operation and ongoing support in helping us maintain a safe and efficient environment for all.
Te Motu Cross Country
Yesterday Te Motu headed to Mazengarb Park for our cross country event. The course was wet but the weather was dry. We had 4 competitive races, followed by a chaotic but fun class relay on the football fields.
Well done to all the students who completed the competitive course. We saw some fantastic sportsmanship, effort and attitude from athletes, supporters and marshals.
Top 3 placings were as follows:
Year 7 Girls
Lara Thomson, Ava Nagel, Mila Mei-Signal
Year 7 Boys
Devin Direen, Eli Chisholm, Benny Ransfield
Year 8 Girls
Lucie Thomson, Neveah Shallcrass-Hall, Sophie Tee
Year 8 Boys
Ty Gardiner, Isaac Ransfield, Ashton Chester
Students who qualified for Interschools have been given a notice with a permission slip. These need to be returned to Caty Spencer as soon as possible please.
Te Moana Cross-Country Success
Last Wednesday, Te Moana students enjoyed a fantastic Cross-Country event at Mazengarb Reserve. This was the first year our Year 4 students competed at the venue, completing a 1 km course, while our Year 5 and 6 students tackled the challenging 2 km course.
Despite a demanding hill that tested their stamina, all students showed incredible grit, perseverance, and positive “Can Do” attitudes. We are extremely proud of the effort and determination displayed by every runner as they represented Te Moana with pride.
A huge thank you goes to our Senior Sports Ambassadors, Olivia Noble, Dakota Bell, and Aidan Robertson, who assisted with setting up the course and marshalling throughout the event. We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the parents and whānau members who helped walk with our tamariki and supervise students during the day. Your support was invaluable and greatly appreciated.
